Philippine Embassy in Tokyo Commemorates 154th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal
Philippine Ambassador to Japan Manuel M. Lopez led officers and staff of the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo in the commemoration of the 154th birth anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal on 19 June 2015 at the main lobby of the Embassy.
The commemoration began with the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, followed by a floral offering at the bust of Dr. Rizal by Ambassador Lopez. In his message for this occasion, the Ambassador said that Rizal’s sacrifice for the country should continue to serve as a guide and inspiration to the Embassy personnel in the fulfillment of their task of serving the nation abroad.
After the Ambassador’s message, Second Secretary and Consul Dominic Xavier M. Imperial read an excerpt taken from Rizal’s “The Philippines a Century Hence,” sharing his view on the relevance of Rizal’s vision of a free, progressive, and sustainable nation for Filipinos today.
The national hero visited Yokohama and Tokyo in February and March 1888 on his way to Europe. At that time, he predicted that the Philippines shall have much contact with Japan in the future.
