Death and Shipment of Remains

The Embassy primarily handles cases of death of Filipino residents or tourists in Japan. The Embassy will issue a Report of Death if the deceased died within its jurisdiction.

For these cases, the Embassy can:

  • receive reports of death from the police, family or friends;
  • in case the deceased has no family members present in Japan, the Embassy will coordinate with the family in the Philippines and the Japanese funeral parlors for cremation or shipment arrangements of the remains to the Philippines; and
  • issue Report of Death and Consular Mortuary Certificate for shipment of remains/cremated remains.

Requirements for Philippine Customs Clearance:

For reference, the average funeral parlor rates as of November 2021 are the following:

  • Shipment of remains (embalmed)
    JPY 800,000 – 1,500,000
  • Cremation
    JPY 300,000 – 500,000
