PH Films Featured at the Fukuoka Film Festival
15-23 September 2018 – As part of the year-long celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Philippine Cinema, five (5) Filipino Films were featured at the Fukuoka Film Festival held at the United Cinema, Canal City, Fukuoka City, namely: “Nervous Translation” (Shireen Seno), “Smaller and Smaller Circles” (Raya Martin), “Bagahe” (Zig Dulay), “Women of the Weeping River” (Sheron Dayoc) and “Nunal Sa Tubig” (Ishmael Bernal).
As one the side events, a special symposium on the role of Philippine Alternative and Archipelagic Cinema in the promotion and exposure of Philippine Cinema in the international arena was held, led by FDCP Chairperson and CEO, Ms. Mary Liza Diño-Seguerra together with Producer John Torres, Actress Laila Ulao, Directors Shireen Seno and Zig Dulay and Festival Director Teng Mangansakan.
Finally, one of the highlights of the festival was the screening of “Women of the Weeping River” followed by an interview of the movie’s lead actress, Ms. Laila Ulao. Ms. Ulao played the role of “Satra” in the movie which won her a nomination for Best Actress in Gawad Urian and prizes at the QCinema and ASEAN-China Film Festival. During the interview, she shared that she is proud to represent her tribe, Tausug, and the all-Muslim cast of non-actors from Western Mindanao. She hopes that the movie will help viewers better understand the Muslims in Mindanao and contribute towards achieving lasting peace in the region. END
