Philippine Embassy, CHED Commit To Strenhthening Philippines-Japan Cooperation on Higher Education in Meeting with Filipino Scholars
TOKYO, 08 May 2025 – The Philippine Embassy, represented by Chargé d’affaires, a.i. (CDA) Christian L. De Jesus, welcomed Secretary J. Prospero E. De Vera III, Chairperson of the Commission on Higher Education of the Philippines (CHED), and the CHED delegation at the chancery during CHED’s official visit to Tokyo this week.

In his welcome remarks, CDA De Jesus reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to supporting CHED’s initiatives aimed at further strengthening Philippines–Japan cooperation in higher education. He expressed hope that the Commission’s meetings with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT), the Japan Foundation, the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS), and other institutions during their visit to Tokyo would result in concrete outcomes that benefit the Philippine education sector and Filipino education professionals.
CHED’s meeting with the Embassy, which was also attended by the Association of Filipino Students in Japan (AFSJ) Executive Committee led by its President, Mr. Kevin Saure, produced discussions on the state of higher education in the Philippines, the Philippine government’s initiatives to strengthen the country’s higher education programs, and the development of improved information dissemination systems to maximize higher education opportunities in Japan for Filipino scholars.
Secretary De Vera was joined by Dr. Jose V. Camacho, Jr., Chancellor of University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB); Atty. Ryan L. Estevez, CHED Officer-in-Charge Executive Director, Unified Student Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education (UniFAST), Mr. Felizardo R. Colambo, Deputy Director General for Special Concerns of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), and Ms. Zyrile Gomez, Assistant of CHED Chairperson, during the meeting with the Embassy.
