Philippines and MILF Peace Panels Convey Appreciation to Prof. Uesugi for Invaluable Services in the Mindanao Peace Process
21 October 2014 – Ambassador Manuel M. Lopez presented to Prof. Yuji Uesugi the Plaque of Appreciation from the Government of the Philippines Peace Panel and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front Peace Panel for his invaluable service as a member of the Independent Commission on Policing (ICP) for the proposed Bangsamoro entity.
On behalf of the peace panels, Amb. Lopez thanked Prof. Uesugi and Japan for their valuable contribution to the work of the ICP that adds to the many forms of support for the advancement of the Mindanao peace process and Mindanao’s development under the Japan-Bangsamoro Initiatives for Reconstruction and Development.
Prof. Uesugi is a member of and the international expert in the 7-man ICP composed of representatives of the Philippine Government, MILF, Canada, Australia and Japan. The ICP was created under the Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro signed by the Philippines and the MILF on 15 October 2012. Its main function is to conduct studies and produce a set of recommendations on the appropriate form and structure of policing for the Bangsamoro, which is set to replace the ARMM by 2016.
Prof. Uesugi holds a PhD. In International Conflict Analysis and teaches in Waseda University in Tokyo. He was formerly with Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation of the Hiroshima University. Prof. Uesugi specializes in peace building, security sector reform and peacekeeping operations based on conflict resolution and international relations.
