Philippines joins 4th FIBA Asia Cup held in Tokyo
The Philippines is sending the SMART Gilas Pilipinas as its national basketball team in its campaign towards the 4th FIBA (Fédération Internationale de Basketball) Asia Cup in Tokyo from 14-22 September 2012 at the Ota City General Gymnasium.
Helmed by veteran head coach Chot Reyes, Team Philippines hopes to dominate the boards and light up the scoreboards in Tokyo as it retains the core team that won the recent 34th William Jones Cup, where the Philippines won the title after a gap of 14 years. The team was commended by the Senate of the Philippines for this achievement.
The Philippines was a semifinalist in the previous edition of this event, when it was called the FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup, at the 3rd FIBA Asia Stanovic Cup at Beirut, Lebanon in 2010. Team Philippines is drawn in Group A with 26th FIBA Asia Championship winner China, 3rd FIBA Asia Cup defending champion Lebanon, Macau and Uzbekistan of the Preliminary Round competition at this year’s 4th FIBA Asia Cup.
The Philippine Embassy encourages the Filipino community in Japan to come out in full force to show its strong support for Team Philippines. The competition schedule for the Philippines is as follows:
