Philippine Embassy in Tokyo Receives Donation Pledge from AEON Co. Ltd.
On 27 December 2011, the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo welcomed officials from AEON Co. Ltd and affiliated companies who will donate ¥5 million in cash (approximately P2.8 million) as humanitarian assistance for those affected by Typhoon Sendong (international name: Washi) in the Philippines.
Along with some Embassy officials, Chargé d’affaires, a.i. Gina Jamoralin met with Ms. Yukiyo Komatsu, Group Chief Environmental Officer of AEON Co. Ltd., Mr. Nobuyuki Abe, President and Representative Director of MINISTOP Co. Ltd., Mr. Kazuhide Kamitani, President and CEO of AEON Credit Service Co. Ltd., and other officials.
Ms. Komatsu expressed condolences and solidarity with the Philippines in the wake of the damages brought by Typhoon Sendong. As Japan was hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake on 11 March 2011 where there were widespread and unprecedented losses to life and property, Ms. Komatsu also expressed appreciation for the assistance that Philippines extended to Japan. She said that mutual support is important among countries such as Japan and the Philippines when responding to disasters.
Chargé d’affaires Jamoralin thanked the officials of AEON Co. Ltd. and affiliate companies for their generous contribution and concern for those affected by Typhoon Sendong. She recalled that AEON Co. Ltd. also extended a similar voluntary cash donation to those affected by Typhoon Ondoy in the Philippines in 2009. She also recognized Japan’s immediate and timely response from its public and private sectors after the Typhoon Sendong hit the Philippines.
AEON Co. Ltd is one of the largest Japanese corporations involved in general merchandise operations, retail operations, retail property development, finance, convenience store operations, travel, and environmental preservation among other sectors. MINISTOP Co. Ltd, a member company of AEON Co. Ltd, has more than 330 convenience stores in the Philippines which it operates with its Philippine partner, JG Summit Holdings Inc.
