Filipino GRIPS Scholars Urged to Engage in Initiatives For Filipino Community in Japan

TOKYO, 27 November 2025 – The Philippine Embassy in Japan, led by Deputy Chief of Mission Christian L. De Jesus, welcomed twelve (12) Filipino scholars currently undertaking studies at Japan National Graduate Institute of Policy Studies (GRIPS), during the latter’s courtesy call on 17 November 2025.

The students, who mostly come from various Philippine government agencies and institutions, are Mr. Glen Hernandez Tampis from the Bureau of Customs, Ms. Katha Ma-i Montes Estopace formerly from the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), Ms. Charlene Caldo Mariquit from the Department of Agriculture, Ms. Czarieena Pauline Cuya Antonio from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Ms. Ramona Maria Lopez Miral from PIDS, Ms. Deonah Abigail Lugo Miole from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Jobelle Clarisse Dayupay Montais from the Department of Economy, Planning and Development (DEPDev), Mr. Socrates Madrigal Simbe II from the Department of Energy, Mr. Dustin Adriel Villacastin Sulat from the Philippine Statistics Authority, Ms. Genshen Leobrera Espedido from DEPDev, Mr. Iñaqui Angelo Mangahas from the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development, and Mr. Lianne Angelico Depante from the University of the Philippines.

“The Embassy is hopeful that the current batch of Filipino scholars at GRIPS will learn best practices on public policy and government systems in Japan through their respective course programs at the Institute, and will enable them to implement these to further enhance processes and implement sustainable solutions in the Philippine civil service,” said Philippine Ambassador Mylene J. Garcia-Albano in a statement following the courtesy call.

De Jesus invited Filipino scholars from the Japan National Graduate Institute of Policy Studies (GRIPS) to participate in the Embassy’s various initiatives and programs, especially for the Filipino Community, during the latter’s courtesy call on 17 November 2025.

The Embassy invited the students to actively participate in the Embassy’s various initiatives and programs, especially for the Filipino community in Japan. In reply, the Filipino GRIPS scholars expressed their interest to take part in the Embassy’s programs, especially in sharing their respective experiences and expertise in various fields such as customs, gender and development, and public administration.

Since its establishment in 1997, GRIPS has awarded more than 6,500 certificates to individuals from the public and private sectors representing 126 countries. Representatives from the Philippines have participated annually in GRIPS’ various programs, including those for government executives.
