A Forum on Philippine Studies To Commemorate Philippines-Japan Friendship Day

TOKYO, 5 July 2024 – In celebration of Philippines-Japan Friendship Day, the Philippine Embassy in Japan and Sentro Rizal – Tokyo will host “A Forum on the Role of Filipinologists and Philippine Studies in Deepening Mutual Understanding” on 29 July 2024 at the Azabu Civic Center, Minato City, Tokyo.

The Forum will feature a discussion among foremost Filipinologists Mr. Takushi Ohno, Chairman of the University of the Philippines (UP) Alumni Association – Japan Chapter; Dr. Wataru Kusaka, Professor at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies; and Dr. Yoshiko Nagano, Professor Emeritus at Kanagawa University.

Philippine Studies, encompassing various disciplines, helps cast light on the multifaceted aspects of Philippine society, culture, history and contemporary issues. Through their research, publications and advocacy, Philippine Studies experts and scholars shape narratives, challenge stereotypes, and promote intercultural dialogue. Their work therefore plays a vital role in shaping a more informed, interconnected, and harmonious relationship between the Philippines and Japan.

“Friendship is a constant work in progress that involves continuous efforts to understand and discover new aspects of each other’s cultures and histories. Filipinologists and Philippine Studies scholars contribute to this ongoing process, helping to bridge gaps and build a deeper, more nuanced understanding between our two nations,” said Philippine Ambassador to Japan Mylene J. Garcia-Albano.

The program will also feature a performance by the UP Los Baños Choral Ensemble, renowned for its renditions of classical and contemporary masterpieces as well as popular and folk music from around the world.

The Philippines and Japan normalized their diplomatic relations on 23 July 1956. Since then, the ties between the two countries have grown and expanded into many areas of mutual interest, culminating in the establishment of a Strategic Partnership in 2011. An exchange of high-level visits took place last year, with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. visiting Tokyo in February and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visiting Manila in November.
