Two Filipino Graduates From The National Defense Academy of Japan Take Oath of Office as Armed Forces Officials
Tokyo, 22 March 2021 – H.E. Jose C. Laurel V, Philippine Ambassador to Japan, led the donning of ranks on and administered the oath of office of Mr. Alexis Paul Maglangit and Ms. Jewel Orense as Ensign of the Philippine Navy and Second Lieutenant of the Philippine Air Force, respectively. Held at the Philippine Embassy, the ceremony was attended by Defense and Armed Forces Attaché Col. Gleen Albert C. Laguardia, Administrative Assistant to DAFA TSg Alejandro P. Santos II, and witnessed by foster family members Mr. Fusao Oda, Ms. Yumiko Oda, and Mr. Taiga Obayashi.
Ensign Maglangit and 2nd Lt Orense were part of the 23 foreign graduates among the 488 fresh graduates from the National Defense Academy of Japan in ceremonies held on 21 March 2021 and attended by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga. At the NDA, Ensign Maglangit joined the Judo Club and took Jukendo lessons while 2nd Lt Orense joined the Iaido Club. The NDA is the premier military academy of Japan which was established in 1952.
The Japanese Government grants full scholarship to two (2) PMA cadets to study at NDA yearly since 1996. The scholarship includes one year Nihongo language course and four years of undergraduate courses in science and engineering. Both Maglangit and Orense were admitted into the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) in 2014 and sent to NDA as cadet scholars in 2015. Prior to their admission to the PMA, both Ensign Maglangit and 2nd Lt. Orenses were engineering students from Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) Batangas State University, respectively.
