TOKYO, 14 August 2025 – The De La Salle University (DLSU) and University of the Philippines (UP) men’s basketball teams represented the Philippines in the 2025 World University Basketball Series (WUBS) held on 09-11 August 2025 in Tokyo, Japan. The Philippine Embassy provided support to their participation as part of its cultural and public diplomacy initiatives.

Both teams, which are recognized as two of the best university basketball teams in the Philippines, showcased the country’s prowess in the sport during the ballgames. DLSU secured 2nd place in the tournament, with Korea University emerging as this year’s champion.

“Basketball is a well-loved sport in the Philippines, and sports is an excellent platform to further strengthen people-to-people ties between the Philippines and Japan, and other countries. This ideal combination was exemplified by WUBS during the tournament. I am truly proud of the DLSU and UP for giving their all in the games,” said Philippine Ambassador to Japan Mylene J. Garcia-Albano, who personally witnessed the teams’ dedication and skill, as well as the outpouring of support from their families, friends and fans.

Ahead of the tournament, Ambassador Garcia-Albano hosted both university teams and their delegations at the Official Residence on 06 and 07 August 2025.

The World University Basketball Series (WUBS), established in 2022, is an international basketball championship for individual university teams, aimed at raising the profile of university-level basketball in Asia. In 2024, DLSU claimed the championship title. This year’s edition featured eight participating teams from across Asia and drew more than 9,000 spectators, the highest attendance since the tournament’s inception.
