TOKYO, 2 October 2025 – In closing the celebration of the 2025 Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANAMo), the Philippine Embassy in Japan received a copy of the publication “The Philippine Navy History: Birth” in a book turnover on 30 September 2025.
Philippine Ambassador to Japan Mylene J. Garcia-Albano was presented with a first-edition copy of the publication from Capt. Peter G. Tolentino III (PN), Philippine Defense and Armed Forces Attache, which will be included in the Embassy’s extensive library collection in its Sentro Rizal.
First published in 2024, the book provides an extensive account of the Philippines’ seafaring history and the predecessors of the modern Philippine Navy. Authored by Capt. Nerelito P. Martinez (PN) MNSA, LTJG Jhon Carlo F. Ebol (PN), and Mr. Kim Renzon D. Palagan, it navigates the evolution of the country’s naval forces and the tides of challenges it overcame from pre-colonial times to the American colonial period.
“This book provides a deeper perspective of the history of the Philippine Navy that most people are not aware of. Filipinos should know more about their maritime heritage for this is endowed to us as a gift to be protected, and passed on to future generations,” Ambassador Albano commented in her short message during the book turnover.
Among its commemorative activities for MANAMo 2025, the Embassy also launched its “Maritime Mondays” public diplomacy campaign that showcases the Philippines’ rich and vibrant marine life and traditions. Every Monday of September 2025, the Embassy released engaging infographics and trivia on the marine resources and traditions that underscore the Philippines’ identity as an archipelagic nation and a premier marine ecotourism destination.
The Philippines celebrated MANAMo 2025 with the theme Nagkakaisang Kapuluan, Panatag na Karagatan (United Archipelago, Secure Oceans).
