Philippine Embassy Hosts AFSJ’s Annual “Paghayo sa Taglagas” Recognition Rites

Philippine Embassy in Japan Deputy Chief of Mission Christian L. De Jesus delivered welcome remarks on behalf of Ambassador Mylene J. Garcia-Albano during the annual “Paghayo Sa Taglagas” or autumn recognition rites of the Association of Filipino Students in Japan (AFSJ) held on 23 September 2025 in hybrid format at the Embassy’s Multi-Purpose Hall.

TOKYO, 30 September 2025 – In support of Filipino scholars in Japan, the Philippine Embassy hosted the annual “Paghayo Sa Taglagas” autumn recognition rites of the Association of Filipino Students in Japan (AFSJ) held on 23 September 2025 in hybrid format at the Embassy’s Multi-Purpose Hall and online.

Forty-two (42) Filipino graduates who received post-graduate and doctoral degrees from various Japanese universities in 2025 were honored during the ceremony, and were accompanied by their families and friends.

“Today’s event is a testament to the resilience of the Filipino spirit and a proof that, wherever Filipinos are in the world, our strength and values will always shine. Let your education and experiences here in Japan be the foundation towards your journey to bringing a positive impact in our society – especially in a time when our beloved country – the Philippines, is in need of renewed hope, integrity and purpose,” said Philippine Embassy in Japan Deputy Chief of Mission Christian L. De Jesus, during his welcome remarks in Filipino, on behalf of Ambassador Mylene J. Garcia-Albano.

AFSJ has also invited other organizations of Filipino scholars in Japan, such as the Philippine Association of Japanese Government Scholars (PHILAJAMES), to take part in the program.

The recognition ceremony, the biggest so far in recent years according to AFSJ, also underscored the challenges and triumphs of Filipino students in Japan, and the camaraderie and friendship they have built through AFSJ and their respective networks in Japan.

Currently led by its president, Mr. Kevin Brandon Saure, AFSJ was established in 1954, and now has more than 100 members from universities and academic institutions across Japan.The group organizes regular learning sessions, research activities, and other socio-cultural initiatives for its members, and student network in Japan and in the Philippines.

The Philippine Embassy has been supporting its activities, especially its bi-annual “Paghayo” and oath-taking ceremonies.
