PE Tokyo Commemorates Mariano Ponce Centennial Death Anniversary and Celebrates National Flag Day

28 May 2018 – The Philippine Embassy in Tokyo, led by Charge d’Affaires, a.i. Eduardo Martin R. Meñez, joined the country in commemorating the 100th Death Anniversary of Mariano Ponce, known in Philippine history as a propagandist and one of the founders of La Solidaridad and President Emilio Aguinaldo’s representative to Japan during the First Republic. He sojourned to Japan to seek aid and purchase weapons for the country. At the end of his mission, he went back to the Philippines with his Japanese wife, Okiyo Odanwara.

On the same day, the Philippine Embassy also celebrated National Flag Day pursuant to Executive Order No. 179 issued by President Fidel V. Ramos, mandating all Philippine government offices to celebrate National Flag Day from 28 May to 12 June, culminating in the celebration of Philippine Independence Day. END
