PH Embassy, U.P. Fine Arts Dean Discuss Initiatives on Strengthening PH-JP Cooperation on Culture and Heritage Conservation

TOKYO, 21 July 2026 – The Philippine Embassy in Japan welcomed Dean Abdulmari “Toym” de Leon Imao Jr. of the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts (UP CFA) during his courtesy visit on 16 July 2026. Dean Imao was joined by Professor Riza Romero, Chairperson of the Department of Studio Arts of UP CFA, and his chief of staff, Mr. Diego Imao.

The visit was in connection with the goal of the university to explore possible collaborations with Japanese institutions in establishing an art conservation program in the Philippines as part of the national comprehensive strategy in protecting the cultural assets of the country.

Dean Imao also expressed interest in conducting lectures on culture and the arts for the Filipino community and local audiences under the auspices of Sentro Rizal-Tokyo.

The art and the artist: Dean Imao created the bust of Dr. Jose Rizal that is prominently displayed at the lobby of the Chancery.

Dean Imao is the artist behind the bust of Dr. Jose Rizal that is prominently displayed at the lobby of the Embassy’s chancery. The artwork was commissioned by the Department of Foreign Affairs as part of the Philippine Centennial commemoration in 1998.
