Philippine Embassy in Japan Promotes Philippine Fabrics and Weaves in “Habi Natin – A Terno Exhibit and Lecture”
The Philippine Embassy in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) held special program and exhibition of the “Terno” with a feature on Philippine textile and weaving organized by consultants Ms. Len Cabili and Ms. Tetta Matera.
This program consisted of a 2-day series of events starting with the “Terno” Exhibition on 12 June 2023 during the Embassy’s diplomatic reception in celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.
The commemoration of the Philippines’ National Day continued on 13 June 2023 with two sessions of lectures by Ms. Len Cabili on Philippine textile and weaves as well as a demonstration of weaving using a loom by a guest weaver, Ms. Suraya Padirna Jarad from Sulu in the Philippines. Ms. Cabili is a founder and creator of her own brand and the brand’s “Terno” creations were among the pieces included in the exhibit. Ms. Cabili built relations with artisanal partners and works with 22 indigenous and traditional groups in the Philippines. The attendees of the June 13 lecture were Ambassadors, spouses of Ambassadors, and members of the Japanese and Filipino communities.
The special collection of “Terno” was still on display during the day of the lecture. Each “Terno” was made by a famous Philippine fashion designer including Patis Tesoro, Randy Ortiz, Lesly Mobo, Len Cabili, Joey Samson, Dennis Lustico, Jojie Llloren, Ivarluski Aseron, JC Buendia, Puey Quinones, Paul Cabral, and KAAYO.PH.
The Philippine Embassy strives to find ways to share different aspects of Philippine culture and heritage to various audiences in Japan. With this program, the Embassy, with its Sentro Rizal-Tokyo, in cooperation with NCCA, showcased Philippine textile, weaves, and the “Terno.”
