Filipino Officials Take Part In United Nations Training Course in Tokyo On The Treatment of Offenders

Two Filipino officials are currently taking part in the 167th International Training Course being conducted by the United Nations Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI) in Tokyo from 23 August until 22 September 2017.
Deputy Director Nanding N. Bayle of the National Jail Management and Penology Training Institute (NJMPTI), the training arm of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and Ms. Precilla Q. Camposanto, Probation Officer of the DOJ’s Parole and Probation Administration (PPA) are attending the five week course, which trains a group of 23 international participants in concepts and practices relevant to treatment of offenders, with focus on the “Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration of Organized Crime Members and Terrorists”. The goal, according to the UNAFEI’s handout on its FY2017 training programs, is to “prevent (such individuals) from returning to crime organizations and that support rehabilitation and reintegration of such offenders both in the institutional and community settings”.
A formal reception was hosted by the Japanese Ministry of Justice at its headquarters last 30 August to welcome the participants, who hail from Bhutan, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Jordan, Maldives, Morocco, Namibia, the Philippines, Samoa, Thailand, Timor Leste, Hong Kong SAR, and South Korea. Philippine Embassy-Tokyo Minister for Political Affairs Josel F. Ignacio attended the event together with diplomats from the missions of the represented countries.

Established in 1962 by the UN and the Japanese Government, the UNAFEI is a regional institute the supports and promotes the development of criminal justice systems and mutual cooperation in this field in Asia and the Pacific Region. It has, over the years, extended various technical and training assistance programs to the Philippines. END
