Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. to Donate ¥10M for Typhoon Ondoy Disaster Relief Efforts

05 October 2009. The Philippine Embassy in Tokyo received a pledge from Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd (SMM) for a ¥10 million (approximately P5 million) donation as humanitarian assistance for those severely affected by Typhoon Ondoy in the Philippines.

Chargé d’Affaires Gina Jamoralin received SMM Executive Officer and Director of General Affairs Ryoichi Manabe who presented a letter from SMM President Nobumasa Kemori who expressed deep sympathy for the heavy damaged caused by the typhoon and indicated SMM’s intention to donate to the Philippines.

Mr. Manabe cited SMM’s substantial business interests in the Philippines and the valuable contribution of their Filipino employees to their business. Minister Jamoralin expressed deep appreciation on behalf of the Philippines for SMM’s generous contribution.

Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd, was established in 1950 and is a leading producer of copper, gold, nickel and other non-ferrous metals in Japan. SMM’s interests in the Philippines are in cooperation with the Philippine firm, Nickel Asia Corporation. These interests are the Coral Bay Nickel Corporation in Palawan and Taganito Project, a large scale hydrometallurgical (nickel/cobalt sulfide) project in Surigao del Sur.
