The Philippines Highlights The Role of Human Resource Development in Nuclear Engineering and Technology

In a Ministerial-level meeting of the Forum on Nuclear Cooperation in Asia (FNCA), which Japan hosted in Tokyo on 05 December 2019, the Philippines and eleven other countries spoke of developments in their respective countries on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, with focus on nuclear medicine.

All participants gave country reports on various aspects of peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The highlight of presentations included recent developments in nuclear medicine, especially in Japan where advancements in treatment for cancer using quantum medicine is helping to achieve long life for all.

The Philippines presented its innovations using nuclear technology in such fields as agriculture for the improvement of crop yields. Human resource development, i.e. the continued training of nuclear engineers and scientists, remains the most important need for the Philippines, to ensure that the country is able to ride the wave of S&T innovations in a bid to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Department of Science and Technology Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr., Undersecretary, and Dr. Lucille Abad of the DOST- Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) represented the Philippines at the Forum.
