TOKYO-22 November 2013. The City of Sendai, represented by Vice Mayor Nobuyoshi Inaba, presented the Philippine Embassy today with a donation of JPY 1 million for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). Vice Mayor Inaba conveyed the condolences of the citizens of Sendai to the typhoon victims, adding that they want to repay the kindness shown by the Filipino people in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011.

Sendai is the capital city of Miyagi, one of the prefectures in northeast Japan severely devastated by the Great East Japan Earthquake. According to Vice Mayor Inaba, around 20,000 people perished in the earthquake and at present, there are still around 9,000 families who have yet to return to their homes. He also noted that Filipinos in Sendai are organizing a charity concert in aid of the victims of the typhoon.

Many other Japanese local governments visited the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo in the past few days to hand over their donations. These include the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Niigata Prefecture, Fukuoka Prefecture, Saga Prefecture, Itabashi Ward (Tokyo), Suginami Ward (Tokyo), Chiyoda Ward (Tokyo), Minato Ward (Tokyo) and Suita City (Osaka).

In addition to the local governments, a large number of private companies, religious organizations, NGOs, schools and individuals have also given donations. A complete list of donors may be found in the Philippine Embassy website (http://tokyo.philembassy.net/uncategorized/acknowledgment-of-monetary-donations-for-the-victims-of-supertyphoon-yolanda/).
