CDA Tirol-Ignacio underscored the importance of observing 30 December each year as a day of gratitude for Dr. Rizal’s heroism and as an opportunity for all Filipinos to reflect on the hero’s example. “Although we mark today Dr. Rizal’s martyrdom, his death was but a culmination of a remarkable lifetime of unstinting devotion to fostering our sense of nationhood as Filipinos”, she said. CDA Tirol-Ignacio also held up as worthy of emulation the valuable legacy that Dr. Rizal’s years of living abroad has left for Filipinos abroad and the Philippine Foreign Service alike, in terms of serving the interests of the Filipino nation even as they live away from the homeland.
