Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. in Japan Donates ¥2 Million for Earthquake Victims in Surigao Del Norte

The Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. in Japan donated ¥2 million as assistance fund in support of the reconstruction program of the damage caused by the earthquake on 10 February 2017 in Surigao del Norte.

In his letter dated 01 March 2017 to Mr. Eduardo M.R. Meñez, Charge d’ Affaires, a.i. of the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo, Mr. Yoshiaki Nakazato, President of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. Ltd. in Japan, conveyed his deepest sympathies to the victims of and expressed condolences to the families of those who passed away caused by the recent earthquake.

Sumitomo produces nickel and cobalt intermediate products from low-grade nickel ore in Surigao del Norte. It may be recalled that Sumitomo also donated ¥50 million in 2013 for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda.

Mr. Mikinobu Ogata, Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co.Ltd., represented its President at the symbolic hand over of the letter of donation to Mr. Meñez held in Tokyo. Witnessing the event were Secretary of Socio-Economic Planning and National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Director-General Ernesto M. Pernia and Philippine incoming Ambassador to Japan Jose C. Laurel V. Incidentally, both Philippine officials were in Tokyo for the Philippine Investment Seminar and the 35th Joint Meeting of the Japan-Philippines Economic Cooperation Committee held on 28 February 2017.
